According to an article in the April 8 issue of Time, A new study suggests kids might do better on standardized tests if they
were paid for some school tasks. Harvard economist and educational researcher Roland Fryer created a scientific study in 4 US cities. The results are surprising teachers and politicians alike.The question the article--and lots of educational policy wonks--is asking is, Does it work? They want to know if money will increase performance on the only standard of educational performance that matters these days: the standardized test.Read the article to see the findings, but in the meantime, ask yourself how you "incentivize" learning. Do you pay your kids for good grades and/or good behavior? And don't just consider money, but other incentives too. How well does it work (and what does that mean)?
